Why a few ants means more than a few ants
Ants that show up indoors are almost always scouts from a much larger colony nearby — in a wall void, under a slab, or in a rotting piece of exterior wood. Spraying the ones you see rarely reaches the colony itself, which is why the same trail tends to reappear days later.
In Hampton Roads, our humidity and mild winters mean ant colonies rarely go fully dormant, so what starts as a spring nuisance can turn into a year-round pattern if the colony isn't addressed directly.
Carpenter ants are the one to watch closely: unlike other house ants, they excavate wood to nest (not to eat it), and a mature colony can mean real structural cost if it's been established for a while.
What actually stops an ant problem
- Exterior perimeter treatment that targets the colony's foraging path, not just visible trails
- Identifying and sealing the entry points ants are using to get inside
- A follow-up visit to confirm the colony has been disrupted, not just the visible ants
- For carpenter ants specifically: locating the nest, which may require checking damp or damaged wood around the home

Store-bought sprays kill the ants you can see but rarely reach the colony itself. As long as the colony survives, new scouts will keep finding their way back in through the same or nearby entry points.
Odorous house ants are small, dark, and emit a rotten-coconut smell when crushed — mostly a nuisance. Carpenter ants are larger, and their presence (especially with sawdust-like frass) can indicate they've established a nest in wood.
Most exterior treatments show a significant reduction in activity within a week, with full colony disruption typically complete within 2–3 weeks depending on colony size and location.
