A bee that drills, not stings
Carpenter bees are often mistaken for bumblebees, but they behave very differently. Rather than nesting in the ground or a hive, they drill smooth, perfectly round holes into bare, unpainted wood — eaves, deck railings, fascia boards, wood trim — to build nesting galleries. It's the wood they're after, not people.
Here's the part worth knowing before assuming the worst: males patrol and hover near the nest but have no stinger at all, and females rarely sting unless directly handled. The real concern isn't safety, it's the wood itself.
A single hole from a single season is mostly cosmetic. The risk builds when the same spot gets reused year after year — successive seasons of tunneling in the same area is what actually leads to meaningful structural wood damage, not one hole on its own.
What actually stops carpenter bees
- Treating and sealing active holes, rather than leaving them open for reuse next season
- Painting or sealing exposed, bare wood — carpenter bees strongly prefer untreated surfaces over painted ones
- Addressing recurring holes in the same area before galleries deepen and multiply
- Skipping reliance on store-bought traps alone — they catch bees, but don't reliably protect the wood itself

Carpenter bee questions
Male carpenter bees can't sting at all — they have no stinger. Females have one but are docile and very rarely sting unless directly handled or provoked. The bigger concern is wood damage, not stings.
Store-bought carpenter bee traps are popular, but extension research has found they catch bees without meaningfully protecting the structure itself. Treating and sealing active holes, and addressing bare wood, is more effective than trapping alone.
Carpenter bees look similar to bumblebees but have a smooth, shiny black abdomen, while bumblebees have a fuzzy, hairy abdomen. Carpenter bees also drill into wood to nest, which bumblebees don't do.
