Why removal alone doesn't fix it
Squirrels, birds, and rodents don't need much of a gap to get into an attic or wall void — a squirrel can fit through a hole about the size of a golf ball, and mice need even less. Once an animal finds a way in, it tends to leave a scent trail that attracts more of the same.
Squirrels are active during the day (unlike rodents, which are typically nocturnal), so daytime scratching or scampering in the attic is often a squirrel sign, not a mouse. Birds, particularly in vents and chimneys, bring their own set of problems — nesting material is a fire and blockage risk.
Removing whatever's currently inside without sealing how it got there just means dealing with the next one in a few weeks.
What proper exclusion looks like
- A full exterior inspection — roofline, soffits, vents, utility penetrations, foundation
- Sealing identified entry points with durable materials (steel mesh, hardware cloth) built for the animal in question
- Safe removal of any animal already inside before sealing (never seal an active entry with an animal trapped behind it)
- A follow-up check to confirm no new entry points have appeared

Exclusion questions
Pest control typically treats or removes what's currently present. Exclusion goes a step further, physically sealing the entry points so the same issue doesn't return.
Yes — exclusion targets the physical entry points animals use, which applies across rodents, squirrels, and birds, though the materials and approach vary by species.
Details are outlined in your service agreement — ask your technician about what's covered for your specific job.
Most residential exclusion jobs are completed in a single visit, though scope depends on how many entry points are found during inspection.
